India Prepares for Potential Crisis Amid Rising Tensions in West Asia
Minister Emphasizes Vigilance in Aviation Sector
On Wednesday, the Union Minister of Civil Aviation, K. Ram Mohan Naidu, highlighted the need for India to be prepared for possible repercussions stemming from the escalating crisis in West Asia. He emphasized that while the current situation is not an immediate concern for the country, all sectors, including civil aviation, must actively assess potential risks and devise strategies to address them.
Current Situation Not Alarming, Says Naidu
Speaking to reporters in Ranchi, Naidu reassured that the present circumstances are not alarming but urged the necessity for vigilance. He stated that every sector must evaluate the impact of these developments and formulate short-term, medium-term, and long-term strategies. Addressing concerns over rising travel costs amid global uncertainty, he mentioned that the central government has already implemented measures to shield domestic travelers from fare hikes.
Support for Aviation Sector
To stabilize airfares and support the aviation industry, reductions have been made in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, as well as landing and parking fees at airports. Recently, the Delhi government lowered the value-added tax on ATF from 25% to 7%. Naidu noted that approximately five lakh passengers travel daily on domestic routes and assured that they are continuously monitoring airfares. Should demand increase, they plan to enhance connectivity and deploy more aircraft.
New Initiatives for Passenger Convenience
At the Ranchi airport, the minister unveiled a series of passenger-centric initiatives, announcing that the revised Regional Connectivity Scheme, Flight 2, will soon be launched with an allocation of around ₹29,000 crores. Under this updated plan, the government aims to develop 100 new airports and 200 helipads over the next decade. Naidu also mentioned the introduction of flight passenger cafes at airports to provide affordable meal options, reiterating the government's commitment to making air travel more accessible and convenient.
