Team India Kicks Off Red-Ball Training
The Indian cricket team, under the leadership of Shubman Gill, has commenced its preparations for the upcoming one-off Test match against Afghanistan, set to take place this Saturday in New Chandigarh. A video shared on their social media platform highlights players such as Kuldeep Yadav, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and KL Rahul engaging in an intense training session, with head coach Gautam Gambhir supervising the practice. The post caption reads, "Team India hits the nets as the red ball grind gets underway ahead of the #INDvAFG Test."
Upcoming Matches and Leadership Changes
This Test will be India's first red-ball match of the year, occurring shortly after the conclusion of IPL 2026. Following the Test, India will compete against Afghanistan in a three-match ODI series scheduled from June 14 to June 20. Shubman Gill will captain the team in both formats, with KL Rahul stepping in as vice-captain for the Test, taking over from Rishabh Pant. Additionally, Shreyas Iyer has been appointed vice-captain for the ODI series.
Sairaj Bahutule Appointed Spin-Bowling Coach
In a significant development, former Indian leg-spinner Sairaj Bahutule has joined the men's national team as the spin-bowling coach. The 53-year-old will manage the spin department across all formats. Bahutule comes to the Indian setup after serving as the spin-bowling coach for Punjab Kings (PBKS) during IPL 2026.
Bahutule's playing career spanned from 1997 to 2003, during which he represented India in two Test matches and eight One-Day Internationals. Despite limited international appearances, he had a remarkable domestic career, taking 630 wickets in 188 first-class matches and 197 wickets in 143 List A games.
In his new position, Bahutule will collaborate with head coach Gambhir, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, fast-bowling coach Morne Morkel, fielding coach T Dilip, and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate.
