Inauguration of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off India's inaugural Vande Bharat sleeper train from Malda, West Bengal, marking a significant milestone in the modernization of Indian Railways. This advanced sleeper version of the Vande Bharat Express will operate on the Howrah-Guwahati (Kamakhya) route. The launch of this sleeper train is part of several major rail and infrastructure initiatives aimed at strengthening connectivity between Eastern India and the Northeast.

Upgrades at New Jalpaiguri Railway Station

In addition to the new Vande Bharat service, extensive development work is currently underway to enhance New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station, one of West Bengal's key railway hubs, into a world-class facility. Upon arriving in Malda, Prime Minister Modi interacted with students, railway staff, and train drivers during the inauguration of the sleeper train. Designed specifically for overnight and long-distance travel, this train is expected to reduce travel time while providing improved comfort, safety, and reliability.

Direct Benefits to Various Districts

Districts in West Bengal such as Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Malda, Murshidabad, East Bardhaman, Hooghly, and Howrah, along with Kamrup Metropolitan and Bongaigaon in Assam, are anticipated to benefit directly from this service. It is also expected to assist pilgrims traveling to the Kalighat Temple and Kamakhya Devi Temple. The Howrah-Guwahati rail corridor is one of the most vital routes in the country, serving millions of passengers daily. This corridor connects Eastern and Northeastern India, utilized by students, workers, traders, and families alike. Railway officials state that the new service will offer a more convenient and comfortable option compared to existing long-distance trains on this route.

Affordable Premium Travel Option

The Vande Bharat sleeper train is being marketed as a premium yet affordable alternative to air travel. According to reports, the indicative fares for 3 AC are approximately ₹2,300, ₹3,000 for 2 AC, and ₹3,600 for First AC, all of which provide modern amenities at a lower cost compared to airlines. As per a statement from the Ministry of Railways, this train comprises 16 modern coaches with a total passenger capacity of 823.

High-Speed Travel with Enhanced Comfort

The Vande Bharat sleeper train can reach speeds of up to 180 km/h. It features an advanced suspension system designed to minimize shocks and vibrations, ensuring a comfortable and less tiring overnight journey for passengers. The train's construction incorporates an advanced aerodynamic design, which is expected to reduce air resistance and ensure stable travel even at high speeds.
