India Launches First Coaches Development Program for Para Badminton

Introduction to the Coaches Development Program

The Badminton Association of India (BAI) is set to host its inaugural Coaches Development Program focused on Para Badminton (Grassroot) in Raipur from December 16 to December 20. This initiative represents a pivotal move towards enhancing the coaching framework that supports the sport's rapid growth in the nation.

In-Depth Coaching Curriculum

This five-day program will gather coaches from across the country for specialized training aimed at fostering long-term capacity in para-badminton. Under the leadership of Dronacharya Awardee Gaurav Khanna, who serves as the national head coach for the Indian para-badminton team, the course will feature a well-rounded curriculum that integrates classroom learning with practical on-court sessions. Participants will gain insights into various aspects such as disability awareness, governance in para-sports, classification systems, assistive devices, coaching techniques, medical support needs, and event management, ensuring a comprehensive grasp of the discipline.

Building on Global Success

Currently, para-badminton in India is experiencing significant growth, evidenced by the consistent achievements at international competitions. Indian athletes secured an impressive total of 18 medals at the 2024 BWF Para-Badminton World Championships, showcasing the country's strength across various categories. This success continued into the Summer Paralympics 2024, where India earned five medals, solidifying its status as a leading nation in the sport. As performance levels rise, the focus on structured coach education becomes increasingly vital for maintaining this progress.

Expert Opinions on Coaching

Sanjay Mishra, General Secretary of BAI, emphasized the importance of this coaching initiative, stating, "This course is crucial for enhancing the ecosystem surrounding para-badminton. The achievements of our athletes on the world stage highlight both our potential and our responsibilities. By prioritizing coach development and specialized training, we are fostering the sport's growth in a sustainable manner."

In addition to Khanna, who has played a significant role in India's para-badminton success, the program will also feature support from Murali Krishna, who has contributed to the Indian team at various World Championships, the Hangzhou Asian Games, and numerous international events across Asia, Europe, and Africa.
