India Joins Elite Nations with Successful Ballistic Missile Defence Tests
India's Groundbreaking BMD Flight Tests
New Delhi: This week, India has successfully executed flight tests of its advanced Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system, showcasing its ability to intercept both long and medium-range missiles, thus joining a select group of nations with such capabilities.
The BMD system is designed to counter incoming long-range nuclear missiles and hostile aircraft, including AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control Systems).
On June 10 and 11, three consecutive flight tests were conducted to validate the multi-layered BMD system against incoming threats, as reported by the defence ministry.
These tests aimed to assess the system's effectiveness in neutralizing ballistic missiles both within and beyond the Earth's atmospheric boundaries.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully showcased several critical technologies that enhance the nation's defense against various enemy threats, according to the ministry's announcement on Saturday.
The flight tests confirmed the successful engagement of targets by the interceptors, which have been developed using cutting-edge technologies to tackle emerging missile threats.
With these successful tests, India has positioned itself among the elite nations capable of engaging intercontinental ballistic missiles, the ministry stated.
Additionally, the first flight test of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile-Medium Range (NASM-MR) was also successfully conducted.
As part of the BMD initiative, India is working on capabilities to intercept hostile missiles at both endo-atmospheric and exo-atmospheric levels.
Endo-atmospheric missiles operate within the Earth's atmosphere, typically below an altitude of 100 km, while exo-atmospheric missiles function in the uppermost regions of the atmosphere.
Senior officials from the DRDO and the armed forces observed the latest flight tests.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh extended his congratulations to the DRDO for successfully demonstrating these vital technologies.
