India Hosts Spectacular Closing Ceremony of the 26th Asian Senior Fencing Championship

The 26th Asian Senior Fencing Championship concluded in India with a spectacular Closing Ceremony at Bharat Mandapam. The event celebrated the achievements of over 400 athletes from 34 countries, with Japan emerging as the champion. The tournament not only highlighted India's growing reputation in sports management but also showcased its rich cultural heritage through vibrant performances. Dignitaries praised the event's success, emphasizing the importance of fencing in India's sporting future. The ceremony concluded with the official handover to the next hosts in Abu Dhabi, marking a significant moment in Asian sports history.

As the sounds of clashing swords faded into the night, Bharat Mandapam transformed into a stunning display of lights, colors, and cultural richness. The inaugural 26th Asian Senior Fencing Championship, held in India, concluded with an emotional and spectacular Closing Ceremony that beautifully blended the intensity of elite sports with the warm embrace of Indian culture.


A Milestone Event

This six-day elite continental event officially concluded at the renowned Pragati Maidan, reinforcing India's status as a premier destination for world-class sports management. Under the inspiring motto, 'One Dream, One Blade, One Pride,' the championship attracted over 400 elite athletes and international delegates from more than 34 nations. This high-stakes competition served as a vital platform for teams as they prepare for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.


Japan Takes the Lead

After six intense days of competition across all three disciplines—Foil, Epee, and Sabre—Japan emerged as the champion, securing a total of 6 gold, 5 silver, and 4 bronze medals. South Korea followed closely in second place with 10 medals, excelling particularly in the Sabre team events, while Kazakhstan claimed third place, highlighted by their historic Women's Epee sweep.


India's Administrative Triumph

For the host nation, the tournament was not only an administrative triumph but also a significant step forward in technical prowess. Organized by the Fencing Association of India (FAI), the event provided invaluable exposure for local talents. Notable performances included top-25 finishes by Prachi Lohan in Women's Epee and Sachin in Men's Foil, alongside commendable efforts from Olympian C.A. Bhavani Devi and promising athlete Taniksha Khatri, indicating India's rapid advancement in the competitive fencing landscape.

The evening was filled with captivating traditional and contemporary Indian performances that highlighted the country's rich cultural heritage, receiving enthusiastic applause from the international audience. The tournament mascot, 'Lakshya'—a majestic tiger embodying the speed and determination of the competitors—also joined in the celebration, dancing alongside the performers.


Dignitaries Acknowledge the Event's Success

The formal proceedings included speeches from key dignitaries. Kiren Rijiju, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, served as the Chief Guest, congratulating all participants and emphasizing the rapid development of fencing infrastructure in India. He remarked, 'Fencing is a strategic and stylish sport with numerous Olympic medals available, presenting India with a significant opportunity to shine on the global stage. I am thrilled to witness its growth among our youth and reaffirm my commitment to support its advancement.'


Anthony JR Donald, Vice-president of the International Fencing Federation (FIE), praised New Delhi's exceptional organization and hospitality, stating, 'On behalf of the FIE, I extend our heartfelt thanks to the Fencing Federation of India and the people of New Delhi for their warm welcome and outstanding organization, making this championship truly memorable.'


Rajeev Mehta, Secretary General of the Fencing Confederation of Asia and Fencing Association of India, concluded the addresses with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all participating nations and acknowledging the support from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.


Handover Ceremony to Abu Dhabi

The formal proceedings concluded with the extinguishing of the tournament flame and the symbolic lowering and transfer of the Fencing Confederation of Asia (FCA) flag to the next hosts, marking the end of a remarkable chapter in Asian sports history.
