India Gains Airport Transit Visa Exemption for Travel Through France

In a significant policy change, the Embassy of France in India has announced that Indian nationals will no longer need an airport transit visa when passing through French airports starting April 10, 2026. This new rule allows travelers to transit through international zones without exiting the airport, streamlining the travel process and reducing costs. The exemption is expected to benefit those traveling to destinations like the USA, Canada, and the UK via major French hubs. This move has been welcomed in India as a much-needed update to France's visa regulations, aligning them with more traveler-friendly policies seen globally.

Significant Update for Indian Travelers

New Delhi: In a significant development for Indian travelers, the Embassy of France in India has declared that Indian citizens will no longer need an airport transit visa when traveling through French airports, starting from April 10. According to the new regulations, Indian passport holders en route to a third country can pass through the international zones of French airports without needing an Airport Transit Visa (ATV), as long as they remain within the airport’s international transit area during their layover.

The Embassy of France in India stated, "Effective from April 10, 2026, Indian nationals holding an ordinary passport are exempt from the requirement of an airport transit visa when transiting through the international zones of airports in France. This policy applies to passengers who stay in the international zone during their layover at a French airport while traveling to a third country."

India has expressed its approval of this new visa-free transit policy for its citizens at French airports. This change represents a notable shift in France’s visa regulations. Previously, Indian travelers were required to obtain an ATV even for brief layovers without stepping onto French soil. The new exemption simplifies the travel process, cutting down on both time and expenses for passengers. Earlier in 2026, French officials had introduced a pilot program aimed at allowing visa-free airport transit for Indian nationals. It is important to note that this exemption is limited to airside transit; travelers wishing to leave the airport or enter the Schengen area must still possess a valid short-stay visa, in accordance with existing regulations. This policy is anticipated to greatly benefit Indian travelers heading to destinations like the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom via major French hubs such as Paris, facilitating a smoother and more accessible transit experience. The announcement has been met with enthusiasm in India, with travel experts labeling it a “practical and long-overdue step” that aligns France with more traveler-friendly transit policies observed in other international aviation centers.
