India Faces Setbacks in Badminton at Asian Games

India encountered a tough day in badminton during the Asian Games, with both Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand and Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto exiting in the quarterfinals. Badminton: Double Heartbreak in Quarterfinals

On Day 8 of the Asian Games, India experienced a disappointing day in badminton as both Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand and Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto exited in their quarterfinal matches.


Treesa and Gayatri, who had previously upset the world No. 3 duo of Mayu Matsumoto and Yuki Fukushima, fell to Malaysia's Pearly Koong Le Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan with scores of 18-21, 9-21 in the women's doubles quarterfinals.


The Indian pair struggled to match the speed of their Malaysian opponents, leading to numerous errors, especially in the second game. After trailing 8-16, they faced a significant deficit at 8-18, managing to save one match point before their opponents clinched the victory.


In the mixed doubles, Dhruv and Tanisha put up a strong fight against the world No. 1 pair of Huang Dongping and Feng Yan Zhe from China, ultimately losing 14-21, 21-18, 18-21. After dropping the first game, they rallied to force a deciding game, staying close at 16-17 before the Chinese duo secured the win.


Dhruv and Tanisha had reached the quarterfinals by defeating the world No. 10 team in the previous round.


Other Sports: A Day of Mixed Fortunes

In other sports on Day 8, India advanced to the semifinals in both the men's and women's compound team events in archery.


Athlete Tejaswin Shankar secured third place in the men's decathlon 110m hurdles with 932 points, maintaining his lead in the overall standings with a total of 5,270 points.


Another decathlete, Thowfeeq Noushad, did not participate in the event.


In surfing, Sivaraj Babu moved on to Round 3 of the men's shortboard after defeating Iran's Davoud Khadir, while Kamali Prakash and Sugar Shanti Gayen also advanced in the women's shortboard.


However, India faced defeats in sepaktakraw and kurash, with the women's doubles team losing 0-2 to South Korea in Group B. In the women's 57kg Round of 16, Bharti lost 0-3 to Iran's Tahereh Azarpeivand, and Sangita was defeated 0-10 by Charmea Quelino in the Round of 32.

Currently, India ranks 10th in the medal standings with a total of 30 medals, which includes four gold, 12 silver, and 14 bronze.
