India Enhances Maritime Security for Sailors Amid Rising Tensions in West Asia
Government Prioritizes Safety of Indian Sailors
In response to the escalating maritime security crisis in West Asia, the Indian government has made a significant decision to prioritize the safety of its sailors. Under the new initiative, the government will directly monitor every Indian sailor operating in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, and Gulf of Oman, regardless of the flag under which the vessel operates. The 'Sailor First' initiative emphasizes that no Indian sailor will be left alone during this crisis, with government support and care for their families available around the clock.
Recent Attacks Raise Alarm
This decision comes in the wake of missile attacks on two commercial oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, which shocked the global community. Tragically, Indian sailor Rohan Kumar lost his life in these attacks, and several others were severely injured. The two vessels, MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa, had a total of 46 crew members on board, including 30 Indians. One sailor died and another was injured on MT Al Bahiyah, while nine Indians were hurt on MT Mombasa, with two in critical condition.
High-Level Meeting Addresses Security Measures
In light of this serious situation, the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, convened a high-level meeting to issue crucial directives. Senior officials from various maritime agencies, including the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian Navy, and the Directorate General of Shipping, participated in the meeting to review the security situation in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, and Gulf of Oman, as well as the contingency plans for the safety of Indian sailors.
Real-Time Monitoring System Implemented
The government has instructed the Directorate General of Shipping to develop a comprehensive operational dashboard for real-time monitoring of each Indian sailor. This system will track vital information such as the vessel's status, ownership, cargo details, crew numbers, safety assessments, travel routes, next ports, and available facilities. This will facilitate quick decision-making and aid delivery in emergencies.
Dedicated Contact Officers for Sailors
Additionally, the government has decided to appoint a dedicated contact officer for each affected Indian sailor. This officer will serve as the sole point of contact for the affected families, coordinating medical information, travel documents, family assistance, repatriation, welfare fund support, pending salaries, contractual rights, and compensation processes. This will prevent families from having to navigate multiple offices and ensure timely assistance.
Continuous Coordination Among Agencies
Sonowal has directed all relevant ministries, the Indian Navy, the Directorate General of Shipping, and Indian missions in Iran and Oman to maintain round-the-clock coordination. They are tasked with gathering real-time information on maritime security, coastal advisories, safe port arrangements, medical evacuations, repatriation, and the transportation of deceased sailors' bodies, as well as investigations into the attacks.
Condemnation of Attacks on Commercial Vessels
The Union Minister condemned the attacks on innocent commercial vessels, stating that such irresponsible actions against Indian sailors, who play a crucial role in the global supply chain, are completely unacceptable. He expressed the nation's grief over the tragic loss of another brave Indian sailor and assured that the government stands firmly with the bereaved families, providing all possible support from medical treatment to rights and compensation.
Pre-Travel Risk Assessments Mandated
The government has also mandated that every vessel passing through conflict-affected areas conduct a fresh risk assessment before embarking. The captain must make decisions based on professional judgment and in coordination with relevant maritime authorities. Furthermore, ship owners, managers, and agencies hiring Indian sailors must ensure that no crew member is compelled to travel without adequate information, safety, and support.
24/7 Support System for Sailors and Families
To assist sailors and their families, the government has activated a 24/7 complaint and support system. Assistance can be accessed anytime through domestic and international toll-free phone services, WhatsApp, and electronic mail.
International Advocacy for Maritime Safety
The Indian government has raised this issue with various multilateral forums, including the International Maritime Organization, emphasizing that the safe passage of innocent commercial vessels and the protection of sailors is fundamental to international order, and violations of these principles cannot be tolerated.
A Comprehensive Approach to Sailor Safety
It is evident that amid the maritime crisis in West Asia, India has moved beyond mere expressions of concern, establishing a robust and comprehensive system that will continuously monitor every Indian sailor and stand firmly by them in times of crisis.
