This article delves into the highlights of the match and India's path forward in the tournament.

India Takes Commanding Lead

In a remarkable display, India triumphed over South Africa with a score of 6-1, securing the top position in Pool D at the FIH Women's Hockey World Cup 2026 on Tuesday. This victory marks India's largest win in the tournament's history.

The match commenced at the Wagener Stadium, where India quickly established dominance. They opened the scoring in the 11th minute through a well-coordinated passing play on the left flank. Sakshi Rana's shot found Sunelita Toppo at the far post, who finished expertly from close range.

Navneet Kaur then increased the lead in the second quarter with a powerful slap shot from a penalty corner, marking her second goal of the tournament.

Continuing their offensive, India extended their lead to 3-0 in the 25th minute. Deepika Sehrawat's drag-flick deflected to Sushila Chanu, who skillfully guided the ball past the South African goalkeeper.

Second Half Seals the Record

With a three-goal advantage at halftime, head coach Sjoerd Marijne urged his team for more intensity. The players responded immediately after the break.

Deepika scored her second goal of the tournament with a powerful tomahawk in the 38th minute. Following this, Lalremsiami and Sakshi Rana both found the net in quick succession during the third quarter, with Lalremsiami scoring in the 44th minute and Sakshi adding another just a minute later, both from fierce tomahawks, pushing India's lead to 6-0.

South Africa managed to score a consolation goal in the 55th minute when Kayla de Waal capitalized on a deflection from a penalty corner.

Path to Advancement

This victory eclipses India's previous record for the largest World Cup win, which was a 4-1 victory against Spain in the inaugural 1974 tournament. With this win, India now leads Pool D and is well-positioned to progress to the next round.

Earlier on Tuesday, China defeated England 4-2, meaning India only requires a draw against England in their final pool match to secure qualification. India will face England in their last Pool D match on Thursday, August 20.
