India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, has condemned the targeting of commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, calling it "unacceptable." His remarks came after an Indian-flagged ship was attacked near Oman, prompting discussions at a UNECOSOC meeting on safeguarding energy supplies. The situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains precarious, with previous attacks on Indian vessels raising concerns about maritime safety.

India's Strong Stance at the United Nations

United Nations: India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, has labeled the targeting of commercial vessels and the jeopardizing of civilian crews in the Strait of Hormuz as "unacceptable."

His comments were made during a special session of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UNECOSOC) focused on the protection of energy and supply chains, following an attack on an Indian-flagged ship near Oman.

All 14 crew members aboard the vessel, which was en route from Somalia, were rescued by Omani authorities, although the identity of the attackers remains unclear.

In a post on X, Harish emphasized India's strategy to address the ongoing energy and fertilizer crisis stemming from the conflict in West Asia.

"A mix of immediate and long-term strategies, along with global collaboration, is crucial to tackle this crisis," he stated.

He reiterated that the assault on commercial shipping and the threat to civilian lives in the Strait of Hormuz must be condemned, insisting on the necessity of adhering to international law.

The incident involving the Indian vessel occurred on May 13, amidst heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for approximately 20% of the world's energy supplies.

This region has faced significant disruptions due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which escalated on February 28 with coordinated attacks by the US and Israel on Iran, leading to retaliatory actions.

India previously condemned the attack as "unacceptable," and at least two other Indian-flagged ships have faced similar threats since the conflict began.

The UNECOSOC meeting, held on Friday, aimed to address the theme of "Safeguarding energy and supply flows: Supporting global development through international cooperation."
