New Delhi, May 5: The Indian government has labeled the injury of three Indian nationals in a drone attack on Fujairah, a port city in the United Arab Emirates, as "unacceptable" and has urged for an immediate halt to hostilities that endanger innocent lives.
This statement from New Delhi followed reports of injuries sustained by the Indians due to a drone strike that ignited a fire in a significant oil sector area in Fujairah, with the UAE attributing the attack to Iran.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized, "The incident in Fujairah that harmed three Indian citizens is intolerable."
He further stated, "We demand an immediate end to these aggressive actions and the targeting of civilian facilities and innocent individuals."
Jaiswal reiterated India's commitment to dialogue and diplomatic solutions to restore peace and stability in West Asia.
He added, "We advocate for unrestricted navigation and trade through the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law. India is prepared to assist in all efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution of the ongoing issues."
The drone strike in Fujairah occurred amid rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, where a ceasefire between the US and Iran is under pressure.
The Strait of Hormuz is crucial, as it facilitates the passage of approximately one-fifth of the global oil and gas supply, and remains a contentious point in negotiations.
Shipping activities in this narrow Gulf passage have faced significant disruptions due to the ongoing conflict, leading to a surge in oil prices and energy shortages in various nations.
On Monday, the UAE's defense ministry reported that its air defense systems intercepted 12 ballistic missiles, three cruise missiles, and four drones launched from Iran.
The ministry assured that it is "fully prepared to address any threats and will respond decisively to any actions that jeopardize the nation's security."
