New Delhi, July 26: On Sunday, India observed the 27th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, a day dedicated to honoring the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the 1999 Kargil War, celebrating their bravery and commitment.
Across the nation, commemorative events took place, with leaders from various political backgrounds paying tribute to the 527 soldiers who lost their lives during Operation Vijay, as well as the many who fought valiantly to reclaim strategic heights from Pakistani forces without breaching the Line of Control.
At the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth honored the fallen soldiers and their families, expressing that the occasion instilled in him a sense of "new energy" and "new pride."
He stated, "On this 27th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, my presence here fills me with a renewed sense of pride. I respectfully pay tribute to our brave martyrs and extend my heartfelt regards to their families."
Reiterating the Army's dedication to the nation, General Seth affirmed that the Indian Army would persist in its service and aim to elevate its pride further.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, present at the event in Drass, remarked that Pakistan had misjudged the bravery and resolve of Indian soldiers during the conflict.
He noted, "The enemy underestimated the heights of our Army's valor and determination. Our soldiers not only conquered the mountain heights but also surpassed all human limits."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to the soldiers during the 136th episode of his monthly radio program, Mann Ki Baat, emphasizing that July 26 is a date that evokes pride in every Indian.
He remarked, "Some dates in our lives do not require a calendar to remember. Today, July 26, is one such date. It is Kargil Vijay Diwas, a day that fills us with pride and reminds us of the extraordinary courage of our brave soldiers."
In a social media post, the Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to the armed forces for their "extraordinary courage and commitment to securing India," stating that their valor and patriotism would inspire future generations.
Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also paid their respects to the soldiers, recalling their bravery, valor, and ultimate sacrifice in safeguarding the nation's borders.
Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorates India's triumph in the 1999 conflict fought in the Kargil, Drass, Batalik, Mushkoh, and Kaksar sectors of Ladakh, honoring the 527 soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during Operation Vijay and the thousands who fought to reclaim critical positions in one of India's most notable military victories.
