A Landmark Achievement for Indian Hockey
Manoj Vasant Bhore, the Associate Vice President of Hockey India and General Secretary of Hockey Maharashtra, commended India's remarkable achievement of winning double gold in hockey at the 2026 Asian Games held in Japan. He characterized this success as a pivotal moment that guarantees qualification for the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. In a statement made on Saturday, he praised both the men's and women's teams for their outstanding performances, stating, "Today marks a significant day for hockey in India, with both teams clinching gold at the Asian Games in Japan. The women's team triumphed yesterday, followed by the men's team today. We anticipated a competitive match against Malaysia, but India showcased dominance and secured victory with style."
Inspiration for Future Generations
Bhore further highlighted that these victories would motivate young athletes across Maharashtra and enhance grassroots hockey initiatives supported by state government programs. He remarked, "The girls displayed remarkable resilience, and today the boys proved that India is at the pinnacle of hockey. Both teams have qualified for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, and we take immense pride in every team member. They will serve as role models for aspiring hockey players in Maharashtra, aligning with our government’s plans for the sport."
Olympic Preparation Ahead
Vikram Pillay, a former Indian hockey player, extended his congratulations to both teams. He noted that securing Olympic spots two years ahead of time provides ample opportunity for preparation aimed at achieving podium finishes. Pillay stated, "The women's team delivered an outstanding performance yesterday, and today the men's team followed suit by winning gold. I congratulate both teams, their support staff, and Hockey India for their exceptional efforts. These victories are crucial as they ensure direct qualification for the Olympics. With this confirmation two years in advance, both teams can thoroughly prepare and strive for excellent results at the Olympic Games."
Path to Victory
Earlier, the Indian women's team, ranked eighth globally, achieved a stunning victory over fourth-ranked China in a tightly contested final, with Lalremsiami netting the winning goal in the 10th minute.
