India Boosts Africa's Ebola Response with New Medical Aid Shipment

India has recently dispatched a second shipment of medical supplies to the Africa CDC, aimed at bolstering the continent's response to the ongoing Ebola outbreak. This 43-ton consignment includes protective gear, diagnostic tools, and medications. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced the aid on social media, expressing confidence that it will enhance public health preparedness across Africa. This follows an earlier shipment sent on May 24, demonstrating India's commitment to supporting African nations during health emergencies. The Africa CDC has welcomed this assistance, especially in light of the recent declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by the WHO. The ongoing Ebola outbreak poses significant health risks, and India has been proactive in providing medical support to affected regions.
 

Strengthening Health Initiatives in Africa


New Delhi: On Tuesday, India sent a second batch of medical supplies to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). This shipment includes protective equipment, diagnostic tools, medications, and nutritional supplements aimed at enhancing the continent's response to the ongoing Ebola crisis.


The Indian government is optimistic that this 43-ton shipment will significantly improve public health readiness and enhance the capacity to combat Ebola across Africa.


External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar shared the news on social media platform X, stating, "India has dispatched the second tranche of medical assistance to Africa CDC, comprising protective gear, diagnostic & monitoring equipment, medicines, and supplements. Confident that this 43 tons consignment will further strengthen public health preparedness and bolster Ebola response capacities across Africa."


Previously, on May 24, India had already sent the first batch of essential medical supplies and protective kits to the Africa CDC.


Jaishankar had announced on X, "India dispatched the first tranche of urgent medical supplies and protective kits to Africa CDC today. Committed to supporting Africa in responding to the emerging Ebola public health emergency."

On May 29, India reiterated its commitment to assist affected nations and the Africa CDC in managing the health crisis.


During a weekly media briefing in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal mentioned that the medical supplies were delivered by the Indian High Commissioner in Uganda, Upender Singh Rawat, to the Africa CDC office.


On May 31, the Africa CDC expressed appreciation for the emergency medical aid from India, which supports efforts against the escalating Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), thanking New Delhi for its assistance during this public health emergency.


The World Health Organization declared the ongoing Ebola situation in the region a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 17.


Ebola is a severe illness that can be fatal, transmitted through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, contaminated materials, or infected animals. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, internal and external bleeding.


In recent years, India has increased its medical support to African nations, providing medicines and vaccines, especially during public health emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic.
