India and US Trade Talks: No Pause in Negotiations, Ministry Confirms
Ongoing Trade Discussions Between India and the US
New Delhi: On Friday, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry reaffirmed that discussions between India and the United States regarding a bilateral trade agreement are ongoing, countering claims from certain media outlets that negotiations had stalled.
The ministry emphasized that there is no suspension of bilateral talks, stating that both nations are actively pursuing a trade deal that would enhance economic collaboration and benefit businesses.
"We have taken note of a media report concerning the trade discussions with the US. We deny any claims of a halt in bilateral engagement. It is important to reiterate that both parties are committed to achieving a mutually advantageous trade agreement," the ministry clarified.
This statement comes amid a backdrop of increasing diplomatic and economic interactions between India and the US, spanning various sectors including trade, defense, and supply chain collaboration.
Earlier this month, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged with US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau during the Raisina Dialogue 2026 held in New Delhi.
Landau's visit to India from March 3 to 6 was aimed at representing the US at this global conference and discussing various facets of bilateral cooperation.
As per the US State Department, the discussions during this visit were centered on enhancing partnerships in defense, critical minerals, and counternarcotics, while also aiming to strengthen commercial and economic ties between the two nations.
The talks also sought to improve market access for American enterprises and to promote a shared vision for a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
The Raisina Dialogue, which is India's premier conference on geopolitics and geo-economics, convened global leaders, policymakers, industry figures, and strategic experts to deliberate on significant international matters.
This three-day event was organized by the Observer Research Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of External Affairs.
