Strengthening India-UK Strategic Partnership
On Thursday, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval engaged in extensive discussions with his British counterpart, Jonathan Powell. The talks primarily focused on addressing New Delhi's concerns regarding terrorism, extremism, and pro-Khalistan elements. Officials noted that both sides agreed to enhance the India-UK strategic partnership against the backdrop of an 'unstable geopolitical environment.'
Doval and Powell also exchanged views on the volatile situation in West Asia and its implications for maritime security and trade. Doval emphasized that dialogue and diplomacy are the only viable paths to resolve conflicts. These discussions were part of the annual India-UK strategic dialogue framework.
Key Areas of Cooperation
According to the officials, the talks fell under the annual India-UK strategic dialogue. Both National Security Advisors reiterated the importance of advancing the goals outlined in the India-UK Vision 2035 document, which includes enhancing long-term strategic cooperation in technology, defense, and security.
They stressed the need to deepen collaboration in addressing security concerns related to terrorism, extremism, and pro-Khalistan elements. NSA Doval expressed gratitude to the UK government for its ongoing support in these matters and highlighted the necessity of further enhancing cooperation between law enforcement agencies of both nations.
Technological Advancements and Future Collaborations
Doval and Powell reviewed the progress made under the India-UK Technology Security Initiative (TSI), mentioning significant outcomes in sectors such as telecommunications, critical minerals, and artificial intelligence. Doval expressed satisfaction that the collaboration under TSI has enabled the establishment of a silicon carbide-based compound semiconductor facility by the UK's Clas-SiC Wafer Fab Ltd and India's SiCSem Pvt. Ltd in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
Both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in areas like semiconductors, quantum computing, biotechnology, and advanced materials. They acknowledged that mutual defense cooperation has gained momentum and emphasized the importance of deepening defense industrial collaboration within the broader framework of the India-UK defense industrial roadmap.
Maritime Security in the Indo-Pacific
Officials highlighted the significance of maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region and reached an agreement to work on specific maritime defense technologies.
