India and UK Forge New Trade Path with Comprehensive Economic Agreement
Significant Developments in India-UK Trade Relations
New Delhi: On Monday, India and the United Kingdom reached an agreement to share annual data regarding the utilization of their Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). This initiative aims to enhance the benefits for businesses, including insights on tariff reductions and implementation feedback, commencing one year after the agreement's activation.
The CETA, which functions as a free trade agreement, officially took effect on July 15 of this year.
Under this agreement, 99% of Indian products can enter the UK market without tariffs, while 90% of UK goods are either exempt from duties or subject to reduced tariffs in India. This arrangement is advantageous for various sectors, including automotive, manufacturing, consumer goods, creative industries, and medical technology.
"We have committed to an annual data exchange starting one year post-CETA implementation, focusing on how businesses leverage the agreement. This will encompass information on the frequency of tariff claims and feedback on the agreement's effectiveness and areas needing improvement," the joint statement from the 16th meeting of the India-UK Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) noted.
This data sharing will provide a comprehensive overview of priorities and identify opportunities for both nations to assist more companies, particularly small and medium enterprises, in capitalizing on the agreement.
The meeting was co-chaired by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Jonathan Reynolds MP, the UK's Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade.
"The first shipment of tariff-free Scottish salmon arrived in India from the UK within two weeks of the agreement's implementation, with thousands of kilos exported since. Additionally, Scotch whisky has entered the Indian market with reduced tariffs, and the first cars under the tariff-rate quota have successfully cleared customs in India," the statement highlighted.
On the day the agreement took effect, Indian exporters dispatched over 50 consignments to the UK, including electronics like smartphones, various machinery, gold jewelry, ready-made garments, woolen yarn, tea, and coffee.
"We also established a plan to ensure the smooth functioning of CETA, which includes forming its committees and working groups and confirming government contact points for each aspect of the agreement," the statement added.
Moreover, both parties agreed to expand the trade pact and enhance collaboration in services, innovation, government procurement, science and technology, and gender issues, fostering greater business-to-business interactions and regional partnerships.
The next JETCO meeting is scheduled to take place in the United Kingdom in 2027.
