India and Sri Lanka to Co-Host T20 World Cup Amidst India-Pakistan Grouping Discussions
Upcoming T20 World Cup Co-Hosted by India and Sri Lanka
The upcoming T20 World Cup will see India and Sri Lanka as co-hosts, a topic expected to be a focal point at the annual conference. While it is unlikely that India and Pakistan will miss out on the ICC knockout stages, there is a possibility that they could be placed in separate groups for the tournament.
Discussion on India-Pakistan Grouping at ICC Conference
A source from the BCCI indicated, "This matter is likely to be raised during the annual conference. Although the chance of India and Pakistan not reaching the ICC knockouts is low, it is feasible that they may not be drawn into the same group, which has typically been the case in ICC events."
Changing Dynamics of India-Pakistan Cricket Relations
Historically, India and Pakistan have often been placed in the same groups during ICC tournaments. However, recent tensions, including the attack in Pahalgam, may alter this trend. The BCCI is recognized as a powerful entity within cricket, and with Jay Shah, an Indian, now leading the ICC, this will be his first annual conference as chair since taking office in December.
Strained Relations Despite Recent Success
Following India's victory in the Champions Trophy earlier this year, the PCB, BCCI, and ICC agreed on a hybrid model for matches between India and Pakistan until 2027. It remains uncertain whether the two teams will meet in the 2025 Women’s World Cup, which is set to take place in India. The BCCI's approach is clear: it aligns with the directives of the Indian government and is unlikely to change following the Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in the deaths of 26 tourists. India holds Pakistan accountable for this tragedy.
