India and IOM Explore New Avenues for Migration at UN Forum
India's Engagement with IOM at the UN
United Nations: India has engaged in discussions with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to enhance and diversify regular migration pathways.
On Friday, Kirti Vardhan Singh, the Minister of State for External Affairs, met with IOM Director General Amy Pope during the second International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) taking place in New York.
The talks centered on broadening and diversifying migration options, alongside India's proactive role in implementing GCM and IOM initiatives within the country, as noted by Singh in a social media update.
Established in 1951, the IOM is a key UN-related intergovernmental body focused on migration, dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration practices. It offers humanitarian aid, manages migration flows, and assists displaced populations globally.
Additionally, Singh held discussions with Canada's Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Lena Metlege Diab, focusing on the Canada-India Migration Initiative and shared interests in the mobility of skilled workers and students.
Arriving in New York on Sunday, Singh is leading the Indian delegation at the IMRF, which is being conducted under the UN General Assembly from May 4 to 8.
On Thursday, he had a fruitful meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres at the UN headquarters.
During the plenary session of the IMRF, Singh presented India's national statement and participated in a side event organized by India's Permanent Mission to the UN, titled 'Leveraging Digital Innovation in Migration Governance - The e-Migrate Experience of India.'
