India and Finland Strengthen Ties with New Agreements in Education and Research

In a significant development, India and Finland are expanding their cooperation in various sectors, including education and Arctic research. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finnish President Alexander Stubb announced a comprehensive migration agreement aimed at enhancing innovation and collaboration between the two nations. This partnership is set to transform ties into a strategic alliance focused on digitalization and sustainability, with plans to deepen cooperation in advanced technologies. Modi emphasized the importance of this relationship in fostering global stability and prosperity, marking a new chapter in India-Finland relations.
 

Strengthening India-Finland Relations


On March 5, in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized Finland's significance as a key partner for India in the Nordic region. During a joint press conference with Finnish President Alexander Stubb at Hyderabad House, Modi announced an expansion of collaboration in Arctic and polar research.


Modi highlighted the agreement to enhance research cooperation in areas such as teacher training and school partnerships, aiming to improve the future of education. He noted, "Finland is increasingly becoming a favored destination for Indian students and professionals. We have established a comprehensive migration and mobility agreement to link the innovation ecosystems of both nations, which will also bolster joint research and startup initiatives."


He praised Finland as a model for education and reiterated the commitment to deepen cooperation across all levels of human development, from educational institutions to industries. Modi warmly welcomed President Stubb, acknowledging his first visit to India and his esteemed status as a global leader and author, expressing pride in having him as the Chief Guest at this year's Raisina Dialogue.


The Prime Minister remarked on the strengthening ties between India and Europe, which are vital for global stability and prosperity, referencing the recent Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed between India and the European Union.


Modi stated, "In a world marked by instability, from Ukraine to West Asia, the collaboration between India and Europe is entering a golden era. The historic FTA signed at the start of 2026 will enhance trade, investment, and technological cooperation between India and Finland."


He also announced the transformation of India-Finland relations into a strategic partnership focused on digitalization and sustainability. Modi mentioned successful infrastructure projects, including the construction of the world’s highest railway bridge over the Chenab River, achieved through Finnish collaboration.


He added, "Nokia’s mobile technology has connected millions in India. Together with Finnish architects, we have built significant infrastructure, including the largest bamboo-to-bioethanol refinery in Numaligarh. This visit marks a pivotal moment as we elevate our partnership in digitalization and sustainability."


Modi concluded by outlining the potential of this partnership to enhance cooperation in advanced technologies, including AI, 6G telecommunications, clean energy, and quantum computing, while also deepening collaboration in defense, space, semiconductors, and critical minerals. He emphasized that this strategic alliance between democratic nations like India and Finland will foster reliable technology and supply chains globally.
