India and Ecuador Move Towards Preferential Trade Agreement
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
India and Ecuador are advancing towards finalizing a preferential trade agreement. Additionally, both nations have agreed to enhance collaboration in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and digital technology. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the recent discussions between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his Ecuadorian counterpart Gabriela Somarriba Rosero focused on ways to strengthen bilateral relations. The Ministry announced that Somarriba's two-day visit to India, accompanied by Deputy Alejandro Davalos, has initiated a 'new chapter' in the relationship between the two countries.
Key Areas of Discussion
During their talks on April 29, Jaishankar and Somarriba reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including healthcare and pharmaceuticals, agriculture, trade and investment, digital technology, cultural ties, capacity building, and collaboration in multilateral institutions. The Ministry reported that Somarriba presented formal letters to the Indian side, indicating Ecuador's decision to join the International Solar Alliance and the International Big Cat Alliance.
Grant Assistance for Quick Impact Projects
Jaishankar and Somarriba also signed a memorandum of understanding regarding grant assistance from India for implementing 'quick impact projects' in Ecuador. Under this agreement, India will provide up to ₹120 million over five years for various socio-economic development initiatives. The Ministry stated that the implementation of these projects in identified areas would enhance the welfare and quality of life for local communities in Ecuador, promoting development and increasing public trust.
Trade and Pharmaceutical Cooperation
Somarriba met with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, where both leaders discussed a roadmap for a preferential trade agreement between the two nations. The Ministry further noted that the discussions primarily focused on increasing the export of Indian pharmaceuticals to Ecuador and establishing supply chain partnerships for essential minerals like copper and gold.
Advancing Health Cooperation
Somarriba also engaged with Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda to discuss advancing bilateral health cooperation. The discussions emphasized affordable health solutions and advanced medical systems. The Ministry indicated that the main focus was on establishing an institutional technical mechanism to strengthen bilateral relations in the medical products sector, which includes Ecuador's recognition of the 'Indian Pharmacopoeia' to promote information exchange and regulatory cooperation. Additionally, both parties agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding on health cooperation between the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of India and its Ecuadorian counterpart.
