India and Cambodia Strengthen Ties Through Enhanced Cooperation

India and Cambodia are taking significant steps to strengthen their bilateral relations through enhanced cooperation in various sectors, including trade, defense, and cultural exchanges. Recent meetings between officials have focused on capacity building initiatives, military training, and expanding joint exercises. Both nations are committed to fostering a long-term strategic partnership aimed at promoting regional stability and security. As they work together on infrastructure and social projects, the relationship between India and Cambodia continues to grow, reflecting their shared interests and mutual respect.
 

Strengthening Bilateral Relations


New Delhi, March 20: On Friday, P Kumaran, Secretary (East) of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), engaged in discussions with a Cambodian delegation led by KHY Sovanratana, Secretary of State for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The meeting, held in New Delhi, focused on enhancing collaboration in trade, investment, heritage conservation, and development partnerships.


During the meeting, Secretary Kumaran reviewed India's capacity-building initiatives for Cambodia, which include training programs for Cambodian diplomats at the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service (SSIFS). The discussions also highlighted the importance of expanding trade and investment cooperation, as well as heritage conservation efforts.


Last month, India and Cambodia reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening bilateral defense cooperation during high-level military discussions in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, as stated by officials.


In conjunction with the Army-to-Army Staff Talks in Phnom Penh, Major General Akaash Johar, Additional Director General of International Cooperation for the Indian Army, met with Lt General Mao Sophan, Commander of the Royal Cambodian Army. They engaged in comprehensive discussions aimed at enhancing joint military activities, expanding training cooperation, and fortifying defense ties.


Both nations underscored the need for increased joint military exercises, broader training cooperation, and improved coordination within the defense sector.


Key areas of focus included military capacity building, professional military education, and the exchange of operational experiences as essential components of their collaboration.


Officials noted India's intention to transform defense partnerships with allied nations into actionable cooperation beyond formal discussions. Cambodia expressed appreciation for the training standards and expertise of the Indian armed forces, indicating a desire to send more personnel to India for training and specialized courses in the future.


Both parties reiterated their commitment to strengthening defense relations as part of a long-term strategic partnership aimed at fostering regional peace, stability, and security.


India and Cambodia enjoy a warm and cordial relationship. In line with India's 'Act East' policy and its engagement with ASEAN, Cambodia is recognized as a significant partner. Recent collaborations have expanded across various sectors, including institutional capacity building, human resource development, and financial assistance for infrastructure and social security projects, as well as defense capacity building.
