New York, September 22: Sibi George, Secretary (West) of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), participated in the Franco-Mexican Initiative event in New York, where he highlighted the pressing need for comprehensive reforms of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

The event was hosted by the Foreign Ministers of France and Mexico.

During the gathering, Secretary George reiterated India's longstanding stance on the veto power and emphasized the urgency of reforming the UNSC, as noted in a post by the MEA on X.

Earlier, on September 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres discussed the importance of multipolarity and the necessity for reforming multilateral institutions, including the UNSC, to align with current global dynamics.

This dialogue took place during their meeting at the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, where they addressed various topics such as ongoing conflicts, freedom of navigation, sustainable development, human-centric AI, advancements in renewable energy, and global food security.

PM Modi shared on X, "Had a wonderful meeting with UN Secretary-General Mr. Antonio Guterres. Discussed multiple subjects including the ground covered in India’s BRICS Presidency, India's commitment to strengthening multilateralism and the urgent need for UN reforms."

The MEA reported that Guterres congratulated PM Modi on India's fourth term as chair of BRICS.

Both leaders reiterated the importance of multipolarity and the need for reforming multilateral institutions, including the UNSC, to reflect the realities of the modern world. PM Modi also wished Guterres well for the remainder of his term.

A readout from the UN Secretary-General's office noted Guterres' appreciation for India's collaboration with the UN.

"The Secretary-General and the Prime Minister discussed the priorities of India's BRICS presidency, emphasizing the need for multilateral institutions that accurately represent 21st-century global realities," it stated.

Additionally, they engaged in a comprehensive discussion regarding the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, and their repercussions on the global economy, particularly concerning food and fertilizer access.

"The Secretary-General reaffirmed the principle of freedom of navigation. The two leaders also exchanged views on the rising threat of lethal autonomous weapons," it concluded.
