In a remarkable display of batting, India triumphed over the West Indies, achieving their highest successful run chase in ODI history. The hosts chased down a daunting target of 406 runs in just 43.3 overs during the second ODI held in Guwahati on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone as they became only the second team, after South Africa, to successfully chase a target exceeding 400 runs in ODI cricket. India secured victory by 8 wickets.

Batting Brilliance from Gill and Rohit

Leading the charge was Shubman Gill, who not only captains the team but is also the top-ranked ODI batter. He delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 223 runs off 133 balls, featuring 26 fours and 8 sixes. Rohit Sharma complemented him with a solid century, contributing 101 runs from 75 balls, which included 10 fours and 6 sixes.

During the chase, the opening partnership between Sharma and Gill was remarkable, as they set the record for the second-highest opening stand for India, totaling 255 runs. Rohit was dismissed after his century, leaving the field with a strike rate of 134.67. The record for the highest opening partnership remains with Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, who had a 258-run stand against Kenya in 2001.

After Rohit's exit, Virat Kohli joined Gill at the crease. Kohli, who had scored his 55th ODI century in the first match, managed 29 runs off 19 balls before Ruturaj Gaikwad came in to support Gill, helping steer India to victory with six overs remaining. Gaikwad contributed a steady 31 runs off 37 balls.

West Indies Bowlers Struggle

The West Indies bowlers faced a tough challenge, with none managing to maintain an economy rate below seven runs per over. Only Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph were able to take wickets for the visitors.

West Indies' Strong Batting Performance
