India Accelerates Purchase of Additional S-400 Missile Squadrons Amid Global Air Defense Failures

India is accelerating its acquisition of five additional S-400 missile squadrons from Russia, following the successful demonstration of these systems during Operation Sindoor. This move comes as China's air defense capabilities face scrutiny on a global scale. The Indian Air Force aims to enhance its defense mechanisms, having already achieved significant victories against Pakistani aircraft. With ongoing discussions for further procurement and the development of indigenous systems, India's strategic focus on air defense is becoming increasingly robust. Read on to discover the implications of these developments for regional security.

Strengthening Air Defense Capabilities

In light of the recent global failures of China's air defense systems, India is rapidly advancing its plans to acquire five more squadrons of the S-400 Surya missile system from Russia. These missile systems demonstrated their effectiveness last year during Operation Sindoor, where they successfully shot down several Pakistani aircraft. Following a significant victory against Pakistan, India is moving forward with the procurement of these additional squadrons. Notably, during that operation, an S-400 missile was responsible for downing a high-value Pakistani reconnaissance aircraft, setting a record for the longest aerial strike capability to date.

Approval Process for Additional Squadrons

Defense officials have indicated that the Ministry of Defense will soon take steps to approve the Indian Air Force's proposal for the acquisition of five additional Russian air defense missile squadrons. These systems are set to be deployed on both the eastern and western fronts.

Challenges Faced by Pakistani Defense Systems

During Operation Sindoor, Pakistan had deployed additional squadrons of the Chinese-made HQ-9 air defense systems, which proved ineffective against Indian aircraft that targeted multiple terrorist bases within Pakistan. Similarly, the HQ-9 systems failed to protect Venezuela during recent U.S. actions and were also ineffective in the U.S. and Israeli operations against Iran, known as Operation Epic Fury. Indian air defense systems not only managed to shoot down several Pakistani aircraft but also intercepted cruise and ballistic missiles launched from Pakistan.

Significant Achievements of the Indian Air Force

The Indian Air Force's S-400 air defense system successfully downed five to six Pakistani fighter jets and a reconnaissance aircraft during a four-day conflict, achieving this from over 300 kilometers away, which the Indian Air Force has deemed a decisive victory.

Future Plans for Air Defense Enhancement

To further bolster its air defense capabilities, the Indian Air Force is planning to procure a significant number of missiles. Sources indicate that discussions with Russia are ongoing, and a tender will be issued soon. In 2018, India and Russia signed an agreement for the purchase of five squadrons of the S-400 air defense missile system. The Indian side aims to add more S-400 squadrons to its fleet and has requested the supply of the remaining two squadrons from Russia, three of which are already operational. Additionally, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is working on developing its own long-range air defense system under the prestigious Kusha project.
