Increased Drone Activity by Pakistan Raises Alarm for Indian Security Forces
Heightened Drone Surveillance on Jammu and Kashmir Borders
The recent surge in drone activities by Pakistan along the borders of Jammu and Kashmir has put Indian security forces on high alert. In recent weeks, areas such as Samba, Rajouri, and Poonch have reported multiple drone sightings. During a press conference on January 15, which coincided with Army Day, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi issued a stern warning to Pakistan regarding these activities. Since January 9, at least 10 to 12 drones have been observed along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB). The Army Chief clarified that these drones are primarily being deployed for reconnaissance purposes.
Reasons Behind Drone Deployments
According to defense experts and statements from the Army Chief, there are three main reasons for these drone operations. General Dwivedi noted that these small drones often fly at low altitudes with their lights on. Pakistan appears to be testing for any vulnerabilities in the Indian security grid that could allow for the infiltration of terrorists. By deploying drones, Pakistan is assessing how quickly Indian radar and anti-drone systems can respond. An incident on January 9, where a drone dropped a pistol, magazine, and grenade in Samba, has demonstrated that Pakistan continues to leverage technology to support terrorism in the region.
Analyzing Pakistan's Drone Strategy
Analysts believe that the increase in drone activities by Pakistan is primarily aimed at identifying weaknesses in Indian security and testing the response time of Indian forces. The rugged terrain and limited surveillance infrastructure in forward areas along the LoC make drones a crucial tool for monitoring activities. Geopolitical expert Sumit Raj tweeted that Pakistan is deploying drones for 'identification operations.' The drones sent without payloads are intended to check India's response capabilities and to see which radar systems are activated, as well as to monitor any increased movement of Indian troops.
Attempts to Supply Weapons?
Former top police officer in Jammu and Kashmir, SP Vaid, emphasized that Pakistan seems intent on escalating tensions. He suggested that Pakistan might be attempting to revive terrorism in the region by using drones to deliver weapons and drugs, especially as local recruitment has nearly ceased. He tweeted, 'While India has successfully deployed anti-drone systems, the country has every right to target the launch pads and bases from which these attacks originate.' As Pakistan continues its provocative strategies, seemingly indifferent to India's warnings, it remains to be seen what actions New Delhi will take ahead of Republic Day.
