On December 16, President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the Param Vir Gallery at Rashtrapati Bhavan to commemorate Vijay Diwas. The event was attended by notable figures including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh, and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a heartfelt post regarding the inauguration, expressing gratitude towards the nation's brave soldiers.

Prime Minister's Tribute to the Heroes

In a post on social media, Modi honored the Param Vir Chakra recipients, stating, "O brave souls of India, we bow to you! This nation is grateful for your sacrifices in the service of Mother India!" He emphasized that the images displayed in the gallery serve as a poignant tribute to the valiant defenders of the nation who laid down their lives for India's unity and integrity.

The Prime Minister noted that the gallery was dedicated to the nation in the esteemed presence of families of two Param Vir Chakra awardees and other honorees.

A Shift from Colonial Legacy

Modi remarked that for many years, portraits of British soldiers adorned the walls of Rashtrapati Bhavan. Now, these have been replaced with images of India's Param Vir winners. The establishment of the Param Vir Gallery symbolizes a departure from colonial mentality and a step towards a renewed national consciousness.

He also mentioned that several islands in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago have been named after Param Vir Chakra recipients in recent years.

Inspiration for Future Generations

The Prime Minister highlighted that the gallery serves as a significant site for the younger generation to connect with India's valorous heritage. He expressed hope that this place would inspire youth about the importance of selflessness and determination for national objectives.

According to an official statement, the main event of the commemoration included a floral tribute at the War Memorial, where Lieutenant General Dheeraj Seth paid homage on behalf of all ranks of the Southern Command to the brave soldiers, airmen, and sailors who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation's sovereignty and freedom. A moment of silence was observed in collective remembrance and gratitude for those who fell during the 1971 war.
