Inauguration of Northeast India's Longest Flyover Set for Tuesday

The Maharaj Prithu flyover in Guwahati, recognized as the longest and most expensive in Northeast India, is set to be inaugurated after two and a half years of construction. With a budget of Rs 850 crore, the flyover aims to significantly reduce traffic congestion in the area. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will officiate the opening, which is expected to enhance connectivity in the region. The project also includes beautification efforts showcasing Assamese culture. This development is part of a broader initiative to improve infrastructure ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

Maharaj Prithu Flyover to Open Soon

Guwahati, Mar 9: The highly awaited Maharaj Prithu flyover, recognized as the longest and most costly flyover in Northeast India, is scheduled for inauguration on Tuesday after nearly two and a half years of construction.

With an investment of approximately Rs 850 crore, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will officially open the flyover for traffic at 5 PM.

Engineer Mahmud Rahman from the construction firm stated, “The longest flyover in the Northeast will be inaugurated tomorrow. Nearly 99% of the work is complete, with the final touches expected to be done by tonight.”

Rahman expressed optimism that the operational flyover will greatly alleviate traffic congestion in the vicinity.

This 4.5-kilometer flyover has been constructed collaboratively by Gautam Construction Company Limited and Anupam Nirman Private Limited under the Public Works Department.

Although the project was initially slated for completion within three years, it was finished in just 28 months.

Rahman also mentioned that Assamese culture will be highlighted at the rotary point in Chandmari, where beautification efforts are currently in progress.

Namrata Agamacharya, overseeing the beautification project, stated, “This is the first instance of beautifying a flyover. We plan to plant around 4,000 plants from nearly 20 different species.”

She added that it is encouraging to see local youth participating in development initiatives in Assam.

Previously, on January 29, Chief Minister Sarma indicated that all major flyovers under construction in Guwahati would be completed by April 14.

However, during a late-night inspection, he mentioned that the flyover would be inaugurated in phases, with the first phase originally set for February 28.

The Chief Minister had initially intended to partially open the flyover for two-wheelers first, with full access to follow later.

The government aims to have the bridge operational before the Assembly elections, which are anticipated to occur in early April.

“If the inauguration is postponed until Bihu, it will cause inconvenience to the public. Our goal is to make the bridge available to the public by March 15,” he stated.

Looking ahead, Sarma outlined plans for future connectivity, indicating that the new Maharaj Prithu flyover will connect to the Ulubari bridge, with an additional arm planned along Rajgarh Road.
