Nationwide Protests Planned for Imran Khan's Imprisonment Anniversary

Lahore: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has announced a series of protests across the nation starting August 5. This date marks three years since Khan was incarcerated.

The PTI has declared that the protest will persist until Khan is released from prison. Currently, the 73-year-old politician is being held in solitary confinement at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

Imran Khan was arrested on August 5, 2023, after being convicted of corruption related to the Tosha Khana case. Since then, he has faced multiple arrests and convictions, resulting in his ongoing detention.

PTI General Secretary Salman Akram Raja informed the media outside the jail that rallies will take place nationwide to commemorate the anniversary of Khan's imprisonment. He cautioned the government against any potential crackdowns on party members.

Khan has been isolated for several months, with no family or legal representatives allowed to visit him since December of the previous year. Raja criticized the lack of medical care and justice afforded to Khan, emphasizing the need to end the oppression in the country.

Every week, Khan's family, lawyers, and party supporters gather outside Adiala Jail, urging the government to permit family visits.

Raja condemned the harsh treatment Khan is receiving, stating that he is being denied access to his lawyers and family members. On June 14, Khan was briefly hospitalized for treatment of his right eye before being returned to prison.

On June 25, the PTI demanded that Khan be transferred to a hospital and that his solitary confinement be lifted immediately. The party reiterated its call for the restoration of Khan's rights to meet with family, lawyers, and political allies.
