Supreme Court Adjourns Imran Khan's Bail Hearing

Islamabad: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has postponed the bail hearing for former Prime Minister Imran Khan until August 12, concerning the cases linked to the violence on May 9.

Khan approached the Supreme Court after his bail requests were turned down by the Lahore High Court (LHC) last month.

As the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Khan faces multiple charges in Lahore related to the unrest on May 9, which allegedly involved inciting his followers to attack government and military properties following his arrest by paramilitary forces at the Islamabad High Court.

A two-judge bench, led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui, agreed to the adjournment at the request of Khan's defense attorney.

Barrister Salman Akram Raja, who also serves as the Secretary General of PTI, represented Khan and informed the court that the lead counsel, Salman Safdar, was currently overseas, prompting the request for a delay.

Raja further asked for notices to be sent to relevant parties and for the case to be scheduled for a hearing next week.

The court, however, decided to adjourn the proceedings until the second week of August.

Previously, the LHC had denied Khan's bail, citing his alleged involvement in orchestrating attacks on military sites in anticipation of his arrest on May 9.

At 72 years old, Khan has been incarcerated in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, since August 2023 after a corruption conviction. He is currently facing numerous legal challenges, many of which arose following his ousting from power in April 2022.
