Improvements in Northeast Security Highlighted by Army Chief General Dwivedi

Positive Developments in Northeast India

New Delhi, Jan 13: During the annual press briefing, General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), emphasized the progress in the Northeast, particularly in Manipur, attributing it to the impartial and decisive actions taken by security forces.

He noted that the security forces are actively working to protect the northeastern region from the repercussions of unrest in Myanmar.

General Dwivedi stated, "The situation in Manipur has significantly improved in 2025 due to the neutral and transparent actions of security forces, coupled with proactive measures from the government."

He highlighted key indicators of stability, including the peaceful organization of the Durand Cup, the revival of cultural festivals, and the renewal of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki insurgent groups in September 2025.

Furthermore, he mentioned that the Indian Army, in collaboration with the Assam Rifles and the Ministry of Home Affairs, is dedicated to protecting the northeastern front from the challenging conditions in Myanmar.

General Dwivedi explained, "In light of the unrest in Myanmar, a comprehensive security framework involving the Assam Rifles, Army, and Home Ministry is being implemented to shield the Northeast from potential spillover effects. With the successful completion of phase two elections in Myanmar, we anticipate improved engagement moving forward."

He also reassured that the situation along the northern and northwestern borders remains stable and under strict control, while emphasizing the importance of ongoing vigilance.

Additionally, he remarked on the notable positive transformation in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) in 2025, stating that the shift from terrorism to tourism is gradually becoming a reality in the region.

In the past year, security forces have successfully neutralized 31 terrorists, with 65% of them identified as being of Pakistani origin, including those responsible for the Pahalgam terror incident.
