Importance of Timely Vaccination for Children's Health
Significance of Vaccination in Child Healthcare
HOJAI, April 17: Vaccination is a crucial defense against numerous preventable diseases in children, and it is essential for parents to ensure that their children receive timely immunizations, stated Dr. Bishaldeep Das, a medical officer at Lumding Civil Hospital, during a discussion on child healthcare and vaccination awareness.
Dr. Das elaborated on the importance of vaccines in bolstering a child's immune system from a young age. He emphasized that many severe illnesses that previously led to fatalities and disabilities in children can now be avoided through consistent vaccination.
“Vaccination is not just an injection; it offers long-term protection for the child. It equips the body to combat diseases in a natural and safe manner. Parents must recognize that skipping vaccines can unnecessarily jeopardize their children's health,” Dr. Das remarked.
He mentioned that in India, vaccines are available under the Universal Immunisation Programme at government hospitals and health centers, provided free of charge for children and mothers. He encouraged families to fully utilize these public health services.
According to Dr. Das, the vaccination process begins right after birth. Newborns receive critical vaccines such as BCG, Oral Polio Vaccine, and Hepatitis B, followed by additional doses at scheduled intervals throughout infancy and childhood. Booster shots are also vital for sustaining immunity.
“Parents should keep the vaccination card in a safe place. It assists doctors and healthcare professionals in tracking which vaccines have been administered and which are upcoming,” he added.
Dr. Das further explained that various preventable diseases, including measles, polio, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, tuberculosis, hepatitis, and pneumonia, can be managed through appropriate vaccination. He highlighted that timely immunization not only safeguards individual children but also contributes to community health.
He addressed common parental concerns regarding vaccines, noting that mild fever, temporary pain, slight swelling, or irritability post-vaccination are typical and usually resolve quickly.
“These reactions are normal indicators of the body’s response. Parents should remain calm. However, if there is a persistent high fever, difficulty in breathing, unusual weakness, seizures, or severe allergic reactions, they should consult a doctor immediately,” Dr. Das advised.
During the conversation, Dr. Das recommended that parents take specific precautions before bringing their child for vaccination: carry the vaccination card; inform the doctor of any fever or illness; disclose any previous allergic reactions to vaccines; ensure the child is well-fed and hydrated; dress the child comfortably; arrive at the hospital or health center punctually; follow the instructions of healthcare providers carefully; and avoid unnecessary delays in scheduled doses.
He noted that many parents delay vaccinations due to myths or misinformation and urged the public not to trust rumors from unofficial sources.
“Vaccines that have been approved by health authorities are safe and have undergone scientific testing. Parents should seek advice from doctors rather than relying on false information. Delaying vaccinations can expose children to preventable diseases,” he stated.
Dr. Das also provided guidance on post-vaccination care. He advised parents to monitor their child for a while after the injection and remain at the health center for a short period if recommended. At home, the child should be allowed to rest, stay hydrated, and take medications only if prescribed.
He emphasized that maintaining proper nutrition, hygiene, breastfeeding, and regular health check-ups are equally important alongside immunization.
“Vaccination alone is insufficient. A balanced diet, cleanliness, consistent growth monitoring, and timely medical consultations are crucial for healthy child development,” he remarked.
“A timely vaccine can prevent hospitalization, disability, and life-threatening complications. Every dose is significant, and every child is important,” Dr. Das concluded.
As awareness regarding child health increases, medical professionals continue to stress that vaccination is one of the most responsible and beneficial choices parents can make for their children's future.
