Imphal, June 14: Officials have indicated that the Imphal International Airport is poised to become one of the busiest airports in Northeast India, similar to Guwahati, following the launch of integrated cargo services and the completion of a new terminal.
According to Airport Director Chipemmi Keishing, the airport has experienced significant growth in aircraft operations and passenger numbers over the past 12 years.
Currently, the airport manages over 16 scheduled arrivals and departures daily, with total aircraft movements often surpassing 50, including non-scheduled flights.
Keishing noted that the airport accommodates around 3,000 passengers arriving and departing each day, establishing connections to all major metropolitan areas in India.
Previously, in 2014, the 60-year-old airport only facilitated four arrivals and departures, serving fewer than 500 passengers daily.
The Airport Director announced that the integrated cargo terminal has been completed and is set to be inaugurated next month. This development is expected to significantly enhance trade and commerce, allowing airlines to manage their cargo operations from Imphal, with anticipated monthly volumes increasing from 500 to approximately 1,500 metric tonnes.
Additionally, the existing terminal, which spans about 7,500 square meters, has become overcrowded due to rising passenger numbers. To address this, a new integrated terminal is being constructed on the eastern side, with about 50% of the project already completed.
The new terminal will cover around 22,000 square meters and will include four aerobridges, distinct areas for domestic and international arrivals and departures, architecture reflecting local culture, GRIHA 5-star green building standards, and parking for approximately 1,000 cars and 15 buses, compared to the current capacity of only 250 cars.
Furthermore, a dedicated helipad for helicopter services by Pawan Hans and Global Vectra has been constructed and is ready for commissioning, which will improve inter-district connectivity.
