Varanasi, Oct 26: Police apprehended a young man who was allegedly posing as an Indian Army officer during the recent air show organized by the Indian Air Force in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, as reported by officials on Monday.
The incident unfolded on October 24, coinciding with the air show.
The individual was reportedly moving around the venue, claiming to be a Captain in the Army, which raised suspicions among security personnel. Authorities were alerted after receiving reports of a suspicious person near the helipad at Namo Ghat, where he was introducing himself as a military officer.
Upon receiving this information, police quickly arrived at the scene to question the individual. Initial inquiries and verification revealed that his assertion of being an Army captain was untrue.
After confirming that he had no affiliation with the Indian Army, law enforcement registered a case against the suspect, identified as Arpit Chaturvedi, under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and initiated a thorough investigation.
Sub-Inspector Chandan Kumar, stationed at Adampur Police Station, filed a written complaint stating that he was assigned to security duties at Namo Ghat for the Air Show-2026, accompanied by Head Constable Hriday Narayan Maurya and Constable Mehboob Alam.
While on duty, the police team received alerts about a young man acting suspiciously near the helipad.
Responding to this tip-off, the officers detained the suspect for questioning.
During the interrogation, he identified himself as Captain Arpit Chaturvedi and insisted he was an Army officer. He maintained this facade in front of the police team, but upon verification of his credentials, it became clear that there was no record supporting his claims of military service.
Further investigation disclosed that the individual was actually Arpit Chaturvedi, a resident of Azamgarh district in Uttar Pradesh.
After confirming his true identity, police registered Case No. 0189/2026 against him at Adampur Police Station, citing Sections 204 and 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
Legal proceedings are currently ongoing.
