Amit Shah to Lead National Strategy Meeting on Illegal Immigration

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to lead a crucial meeting with state DGPs on July 9 to formulate a national strategy against illegal immigration. This high-level gathering will involve key intelligence and security agencies, aiming to tackle the growing challenge of illegal infiltration across India. The meeting seeks to establish a coordinated approach for identifying illegal immigrants and ensuring synchronized legal actions nationwide. With a focus on dismantling the networks that facilitate illegal entry, the initiative follows recent inspections by Shah in border regions and aligns with Prime Minister Modi's emphasis on addressing demographic changes as a national security concern.

New Delhi, June 30: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has scheduled a meeting with the Directors General of Police (DGPs) from all states on July 9 in New Delhi. The purpose of this gathering is to establish a unified national approach to combat illegal immigration and the networks that facilitate it.

This significant meeting will include leaders from various intelligence and security agencies, such as the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), Enforcement Directorate (ED), and the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Sources indicate that the Home Ministry views illegal immigration as a growing issue that extends beyond border regions, posing threats to national security, demographic stability, law enforcement, and organized crime.

Once illegal immigrants enter the country, they often migrate to major cities and industrial areas through organized networks that allegedly offer transportation, housing, forged identification, and job opportunities.

The meeting aims to develop a cohesive strategy for states to identify illegal immigrants and ensure coordinated legal actions nationwide.

Officials emphasize the need for simultaneous enforcement to prevent individuals facing legal action in one state from simply moving to another, a trend observed in past operations.

The Home Ministry plans to focus on dismantling the infrastructure that supports illegal immigration. Discussions will include identifying and prosecuting those who facilitate cross-border movement, create fake documents, provide housing, and transport illegal immigrants for profit.

As part of this initiative, the ED is expected to trace financial activities linked to illegal immigration networks and seize assets generated from these operations, while intelligence agencies will supply actionable intelligence to state police and administrative bodies.

This meeting follows Shah’s recent inspections of border areas in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Tripura, where he evaluated border management and addressed issues related to illegal immigration and demographic shifts.

The Centre has also established a high-powered committee led by retired Supreme Court Justice Prakash Shrivastava Navlekar to investigate demographic changes in border regions and propose policy recommendations.

This committee is tasked with visiting border areas and significant urban and industrial centers, with a report due within a year. The renewed emphasis on this issue follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks during his Independence Day speech last year, where he highlighted illegal immigration and demographic changes in border areas as critical national security challenges and announced a high-level mission to tackle them.
