IMD Issues Rain Alert for Assam and Surrounding Regions

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a rain alert for Assam and its neighboring states, forecasting scattered to widespread rainfall and thunderstorms from May 12 to 18. Isolated heavy rainfall is also expected in various regions, with the possibility of very heavy rainfall in Assam and Meghalaya. This comes as the IMD predicts improved monsoon patterns for the Northeast after several years of below-normal rainfall. The outlook suggests that while some areas may see normal to above-normal rainfall, certain pockets in Assam could still face deficits. Stay tuned for updates on this developing weather situation.

Guwahati, May 13: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has released a new rain alert for Assam and its neighboring states.

According to the national weather agency, “Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (with speeds reaching 40-50 km/h), is expected over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya from May 12 to 16.”

Additionally, isolated heavy rainfall is anticipated in Arunachal Pradesh from May 13 to 18, in Assam from May 12 to 18, and in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from May 14 to 17. Very heavy rainfall is predicted for Assam and Meghalaya from May 13 to 17, and for Arunachal Pradesh on May 17 and 18.

In the past 24 hours, heavy rainfall (ranging from 7-11 cm) has been recorded in isolated areas of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, and Meghalaya.

So far this pre-monsoon season (since March 1), Assam has experienced an eleven percent increase in rainfall compared to the average.

Meanwhile, the IMD has indicated that conditions are becoming favorable for the arrival of the southwest monsoon in parts of the South Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands by the end of this week.

This latest weather warning follows the IMD's earlier forecast, which suggested an improvement in monsoon rainfall patterns for the Northeast this year, after five consecutive years of below-normal rainfall in the region.

The initial seasonal outlook for the June-September monsoon indicates that some areas in the Northeast may receive normal to above-normal rainfall, although certain regions in Assam might still experience deficits.
