FIR Filed Against Medical Store Owner for Cough Syrup Trafficking

In Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, authorities have initiated a First Information Report (FIR) against the owner of a medical store for allegedly engaging in the illegal trade of regulated cough syrup. This information was disclosed by officials on Thursday.


The FIR was filed amid ongoing actions against the smuggling and sale of highly regulated codeine-based cough syrup in Uttar Pradesh. Concurrently, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has launched an investigation into money laundering linked to a large interstate and cross-border syndicate involved in the illegal production and distribution of such syrups.


Based on a complaint from Drug Inspector Seema Verma, an FIR was lodged at the Didarganj police station against Bipendra Singh on Wednesday. Singh, who operates AS Pharma in the Bangawan area of the Martin Ganj police jurisdiction, is accused of purchasing approximately 250,000 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup from four companies across the districts of Azamgarh, Basti, and Jaunpur.


Chirag Jain, the Superintendent of Police for Azamgarh Rural, confirmed that the case has been registered and that the suspects will be interrogated shortly.
