ICC Chairman Jay Shah Addresses Controversy Ahead of T20 World Cup 2026
Jay Shah Responds to Pre-Tournament Controversies
Following the successful conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, ICC Chairman Jay Shah has finally spoken out about the controversies that arose prior to the tournament. Without naming specific countries, he made it clear that "no team is bigger than the organization" and emphasized that "an organization is formed by the collective efforts of all teams, not just one."
Before the tournament commenced, there was significant drama. Bangladesh had refused to play in India citing security concerns, which led to their exclusion from the tournament. In response, Pakistan initially threatened to withdraw from the entire event but later decided to participate after considering their options. This series of events raised questions about the ICC's credibility and jeopardized the tournament's future.
While speaking at a Business Leaders Awards event in Mumbai, Shah remarked, "This ICC World Cup was of great significance, especially with discussions surrounding the participation of certain teams and how the World Cup would be conducted. As the ICC Chairman, I can assert that no team is greater than the organization, and it is the collective effort of all teams that forms the organization."
He further stated that the tournament's success is a testament to the ICC's operation through the collective efforts of its members. Shah highlighted the record-breaking viewership numbers, showcasing the strength of global cricket. He also congratulated Team India's captain Surya Kumar Yadav and coach Gautam Gambhir, noting that India's victory has ushered in a new era in cricket.
Analysts believe Shah's comments were a direct reference to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), who had stirred up considerable controversy before the tournament. Various media reports have described his remarks as a "stinging rebuke" and a "straightforward response."
In the T20 World Cup 2026 final, India triumphed over Australia, securing their title as T20 World Champions for the third time. The tournament set global records with over 7.2 million concurrent viewers.
