Research indicates that hydrogen-powered trucks not only contribute positively to the environment but are also crucial for achieving India's net-zero emissions target by 2070.


Conventional diesel trucks release substantial amounts of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and fine particulate matter (PM2.5), worsening air and noise pollution in industrial areas.


The situation is critical, as several Indian cities rank among the most polluted globally, according to IQAir, a Swiss organization that monitors air quality, particularly focusing on PM2.5, a highly hazardous pollutant.


A Clean Alternative in the Fight Against Climate Change

In this context, hydrogen fuel cell trucks, which emit only water vapor during operation, have emerged as a viable and eco-friendly option in the global struggle against climate change. Studies show that the rising levels of greenhouse gases (GHGs), such as carbon dioxide, are causing unprecedented increases in global temperatures and leading to extreme weather events like floods, droughts, and cyclones.


Heavy diesel trucks significantly contribute to pollution, with estimates suggesting that a single heavy diesel truck can emit up to 150 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. In contrast, hydrogen trucks are completely emission-free.


Economic Advantages of Hydrogen Trucks

The economic rationale for transitioning to hydrogen trucks is compelling. India spends over $260 billion each year on energy imports, primarily diesel and other fossil fuels. Hydrogen-powered trucks could alleviate this import dependency and enhance domestic energy security.


Moreover, hydrogen fuel cell technology positions India as a potential global innovation leader. Initiatives from companies like the Adani Group provide India with the chance to not only consume clean technologies but also to produce and export them globally.


Chhattisgarh: A Model for Green Mining

In a groundbreaking move, Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL) is introducing a hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric tip trailer for mining and logistics operations in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh. This region is a cornerstone of India's coal mining industry, contributing over 205 million tonnes (20%) of the nation's nearly one billion tonnes of coal production in the fiscal year 2024.


Raigarh is set to lead a new era of sustainable mining, potentially serving as a blueprint for other states and countries.


Details of the Hydrogen Truck Initiative

In 2022, AEL collaborated with Ashok Leyland and Canada's Ballard Power Systems to develop this eco-friendly heavy-duty vehicle. Ashok Leyland is responsible for manufacturing the truck, while Ballard provides the hydrogen fuel cell. Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL), a subsidiary of AEL, is tasked with establishing the hydrogen fuel infrastructure.


The truck will operate at the GP-III coal block in Raigarh for coal transportation.


Specifications of the Hydrogen Truck

This heavy-duty tip trailer will weigh approximately 55 tonnes and will be equipped with three onboard hydrogen tanks, enabling it to operate for around 200 kilometers (km). It features a tipping mechanism for efficient loading and unloading of coal.


The hydrogen used will be produced through electrolysis, and in the fuel cell, hydrogen will react with oxygen to generate electricity, powering the electric motor. The only emission from this process will be water.


Chhattisgarh's Role in India's Hydrogen Strategy

Chhattisgarh, rich in minerals, is a strategic launchpad for this initiative. The state's economy and job market are closely tied to mining, which also faces the environmental repercussions of fossil fuel reliance.


By initiating this project in Chhattisgarh, India aims to demonstrate its commitment to net-zero emissions on a global scale, ensuring that clean technology is not limited to urban areas but is actively utilized in industrial regions where it can have the most significant impact.
