Hungary Elects Pro-European Leader, Ending Orban's 16-Year Rule
A New Era in Hungarian Politics
Voters in Hungary have made a significant shift by ousting Viktor Orban, who held the position of Prime Minister for 16 years. They have opted for Peter Magyar, a candidate who advocates for European integration, rejecting Orban's authoritarian policies and the global far-right movement. This surprising electoral outcome is expected to have far-reaching implications worldwide.
Peter Magyar, 45, who was once a loyal supporter of Orban, focused his campaign on pressing issues such as corruption, healthcare, and public transportation. He has pledged to strengthen Hungary's ties with the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), relationships that had deteriorated during Orban's tenure.
Following Magyar's unexpected victory, European leaders extended their congratulations and praised his win. His party, the Tisza Party, garnered over 53% of the votes counted so far, while Orban's ruling Fidesz party received 38%. This election result is a significant blow to Orban, who was considered a close ally of U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Orban has acknowledged his defeat in the election.
