GUWAHATI, April 24: The Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium at Sarusajai holds significant memories for Hrithik Tiwari, the goalkeeper for FC Goa. This venue is not just a stadium; it embodies his childhood dreams and aspirations.

On Friday, Hrithik will don an away jersey to face NorthEast United FC, yet the atmosphere will feel like home.

“This is absolutely my home ground. I began my football journey here long before the ISL was established,” he shared with a local media outlet as FC Goa geared up for their match.

Hailing from Guwahati, Hrithik grew up a mere 3.5 km from the stadium. During his breaks and off-seasons, he would frequently return to practice, observe, and immerse himself in the sport with unwavering dedication. Those formative experiences have left a lasting impact on him.

Returning to the stadium now carries a deep emotional significance. “You can find me here during the off-season. Tomorrow, I will be playing on my home turf, and it feels amazing. I aim to make it a memorable game,” he expressed.

However, the match will be challenging. Local fans are expected to rally for the Highlanders, but Hrithik is determined to perform well for his team. FC Goa is currently in strong form, sitting third in the league with 16 points from nine matches, including four clean sheets. Their last match saw them triumph over Mumbai City FC with a score of 2-0.

For Hrithik, this match holds more than just sporting significance. It coincides with the Bihu festival, a time he has often spent away from home due to his career commitments.

“I wish everyone in Assam a belated Rongali Bihu and a Happy Assamese New Year. Over the years, I have often been away during Bihu. While it can be disheartening, I understand the demands of my profession. I hope we win the match, making it a special Bihu gift for me,” he stated.

Hrithik's journey with FC Goa has been marked by steady progress rather than sudden fame. He joined the club in 2019, advancing through the youth ranks before making his senior debut in the Durand Cup in 2021, where he achieved a clean sheet. Although opportunities were scarce in subsequent seasons, he remained patient, learning from senior goalkeepers and honing his skills.

His patience is now paying off. Standing at 190 cm, Hrithik has become a reliable figure in the defense this season, exuding confidence and stability.

A pivotal moment in his career occurred last December when he played a crucial role in FC Goa's Super Cup victory. The team narrowly defeated East Bengal 6-5 in a dramatic penalty shootout, with Hrithik maintaining his composure under pressure.

Competing at the continental level has further enriched his experience. FC Goa's AFC Champions League matches against Al-Nassr allowed him to face elite players like Sadio Mane and Joao Felix.

“It’s an incredible experience. Playing against top-tier teams teaches you invaluable lessons. It boosts your confidence and inspires you to observe how elite players prepare,” he remarked.

As he prepares to step onto the field at Sarusajai once more, Hrithik feels a sense of fulfillment. The boy who once trained on these grounds now returns as a professional, carrying the weight of expectations and a sense of belonging.

For Hrithik, this match is not just another game; it symbolizes a return to his roots, with a sharper focus on his goals.
