How the Election Commission is Ensuring Fair Elections in Five States
Election Commission's Preparations for Upcoming Assembly Elections
New Delhi: On Thursday, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar held a briefing for Central Observers regarding the use of technology to facilitate free, fair, and transparent Assembly elections in five states and Union Territories (UTs).
During the session for the elections in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, the CEC emphasized the crucial role of the observers as representatives of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
He highlighted that their involvement would invigorate the election process across 824 Assembly constituencies where voting is set to occur.
A total of 1,444 General, Police, and Expenditure Observers participated in the briefing, which is scheduled to continue into Friday at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management in Delhi, according to an official announcement.
Election Commissioner S.S. Sandhu remarked that the observers should act as supportive guides for the election officials in the field.
He stressed the importance of publicizing their arrival and ensuring they are approachable, so that any voter grievances can be addressed swiftly to prevent any hint of bias.
Election Commissioner Vivek Joshi added that the observers must ensure that ECI directives are followed meticulously, maintaining impartiality and democratic principles.
He also instructed that Voter Information Slips (VIS) be distributed promptly to avoid any inconvenience for voters on election day.
The observers were reminded to be readily available to political parties and candidates, ensuring that voter complaints are handled quickly.
Additionally, they were tasked with visiting polling stations to verify the implementation of recent ECI initiatives aimed at enhancing voter convenience, particularly regarding Assured Minimum Facilities.
The Election Commissioners also engaged with the observers in a session dedicated to addressing any questions they had.
Senior ECI officials provided insights into the preparation of electoral rolls and the overall conduct of elections in the five states and UTs.
The observers received training on IT applications and media-related matters during these sessions.
The ECI appoints Central Observers under the authority granted by Article 324 of the Constitution and Section 20B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, to aid in the conduct of fair elections.
Their role includes overseeing the effective management of the electoral process at the ground level.
