How Quick Action by Indian Air Force Averted a Major Attack

In May of the previous year, a significant incident nearly unfolded during military tensions between India and Pakistan. Reports indicate that a swift response from an Indian Air Force unit located in Sirsa, Haryana, successfully thwarted a potential large-scale attack. Had this action not been executed promptly, a ballistic missile launched from Pakistan could have wreaked havoc in the capital, Delhi.

According to a report published in a prominent English newspaper, following Operation Sindoor, Pakistan fired a ballistic missile that was intercepted and destroyed within the airspace over Sirsa, Haryana. This successful operation was led by Air Commodore Rohit Kapil, who was the Air Officer Commanding of the 45 Wing stationed in Sirsa, a forward base located close to the Pakistan border. Utilizing the Barak-8 surface-to-air missile system, Air Commodore Kapil and his team managed to neutralize the enemy missile mid-air. It is believed that the missile could have been of the Fateh or Shaheen II class, with Delhi as its likely target.

On May 10, security forces recovered remnants of the missile from the Sirsa area. Videos showing debris scattered on the ground emerged, serving as evidence of how a significant threat was averted in time. The prompt and vigilant action of the Indian Air Force's 45 Wing not only prevented a major attack but also demonstrated the effectiveness of India's integrated air defense system. Consequently, the government is now working to enhance this system further, with a multi-layered air defense framework being developed under the Suraksha program, which will be implemented nationwide.

The proposed Suraksha system will integrate both existing and advanced technologies. This includes the S-400 system acquired from Russia, Barak-8 MRSAM, and indigenous projects like the Kusha interceptor. The aim of this multi-layered security shield is to protect major cities, strategic locations, and critical infrastructure from threats posed by drones, cruise missiles, and hypersonic weapons.

At the time, very few were aware of Air Commodore Rohit Kapil and his team's crucial role, but it is now clear that their vigilance and readiness saved countless lives. It is worth noting that Air Commodore Kapil was awarded the War Service Medal by President Droupadi Murmu on August 14 of last year for his exemplary service and leadership.

Air Commodore Kapil joined the Air Force as a fighter pilot on June 20, 1998. He is an experienced pilot of the Sukhoi-30 MKI aircraft and is also a qualified Category A flying instructor. Additionally, he has led an operational Sukhoi squadron, showcasing his extensive experience and expertise.

Meanwhile, on the anniversary of the Pahalgam attack, the Indian Army sent a strong message to Pakistan. A statement released on social media emphasized that when humanity's limits are crossed, the response is decisive. Along with this message, a shadowy image of India's map was shared, stating that certain boundaries should never be crossed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also remarked on the first anniversary of the Pahalgam terrorist attack, asserting that India will never bow to terrorism in any form and that the nefarious intentions of terrorists will never succeed. He stated, 'As a nation, we stand united in grief and resolve. India will never yield to terrorism in any form. The wicked intentions of terrorists will never succeed.'
