Significance of the Yamuna Water Project Agreement


On June 30, Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma hailed the long-awaited Yamuna water project agreement between Rajasthan and Haryana as a golden chapter in water history. He emphasized that this agreement is not merely a water-sharing deal but a robust foundation for the bright future, water security, and prosperity of millions of residents.


During a press briefing at Jodhpur House in New Delhi, the Chief Minister noted that the realization of this project, pending for nearly 30 years, is a testament to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the effective guidance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and the excellent coordination between the central and state governments. He stated that the double-engine government has once again demonstrated that when public interest is prioritized, even long-standing issues can find positive resolutions.


He further mentioned that in Prime Minister Modi's vision for a developed India by 2047, water security is considered a crucial pillar for nation-building. In line with this vision, the state government is committed to ensuring adequate and safe drinking water for every citizen. Water is not only essential for life but also a vital resource for agriculture, industry, investment, employment, environmental protection, and social development.


The Chief Minister revealed that this project, with an estimated cost of approximately ₹34,102 crores, will provide a sustainable solution, particularly for water-scarce regions like the Shekhawati area. It will ensure safe drinking water for millions of families, reduce dependence on groundwater, strengthen water conservation efforts, and accelerate social and economic development in the region. This initiative will serve as a milestone in the development of Rajasthan, fostering investment, employment, agriculture, tourism, and infrastructure.


He added that increased water availability will create a favorable environment for industries, attract investments, energize agriculture and livestock, enhance employment opportunities, and significantly improve the quality of life in both rural and urban areas. This project will reinforce Rajasthan's long-term water policy and ensure water security for future generations.


Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for this historic achievement, the Chief Minister noted that under his leadership, the spirit of cooperative federalism in the country has been further strengthened. He also thanked Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah for his continuous guidance, proactive initiatives, and efforts to establish effective communication between the two states, which made this complex issue's consensus resolution possible. He acknowledged the technical guidance and administrative support from Union Minister for Water Power, C.R. Patil.


The Chief Minister assured that the state government is fully committed to the timely and quality implementation of this ambitious project. Regular reviews will be conducted at each stage to ensure that the benefits reach the public as soon as possible. This is not just a project; it represents a historic investment in Rajasthan's future.
