Historic Victory: Indian Squash Team Clinches World Cup Title
Celebrating a Milestone in Indian Squash
On Wednesday, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, honored the Indian Squash team that made history by winning the World Cup. The mixed team, which includes Joshna Chinappa, Abhay Singh, Velavan Senthilkumar, and Anahat Singh, achieved this remarkable feat in Chennai last Saturday.
This victory marks India's first-ever Squash World Cup title, surpassing their previous best of a bronze medal in the 2023 tournament. The team triumphed with a decisive 3-0 win against the top-seeded Hong Kong in the finals, becoming only the fourth nation to secure the Squash World Cup, joining the ranks of Australia, England, and Egypt.
A Proud Moment for Indian Sports
Mandaviya expressed his pride in the players, stating that this achievement is a significant moment for Indian sports. He noted, "India is excelling in the sports arena, consistently reaching new milestones. Our women's cricket team also recently won the World Cup. Winning the Squash World Cup on home soil is a tremendous source of pride. The team remained undefeated throughout the tournament, and I am optimistic that this progress in sports will continue to bring accolades to our nation."
Government Support is Essential
The success of India's top squash players has been bolstered by the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), which has been instrumental in enhancing their training through ongoing high-performance support, international exposure, and expert coaching.
Looking Forward: Asian Games and Olympics
Anahat Singh, a young talent on the team, acknowledged the invaluable support from the crowd during the Chennai event. "Competing in my first World Cup alongside my seniors was an incredible learning experience, and I am grateful for the unwavering support from the Chennai audience," the 17-year-old shared.
The team is now setting its sights on the upcoming Asian Games in 2026 and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, where Squash will make its debut.
As the Asian Games approach, scheduled to take place in Japan next year, Padma Shri and Arjuna Awardee Joshna Chinappa expressed her optimism. "We have been training for several months, and the experience at the World Cup has boosted our confidence for the Asiad in Japan. I aim to maintain peak fitness and qualify for the games," the 39-year-old athlete stated.
