Significant Verdict in Custodial Death Case

Tamil Nadu News: The Madras High Court delivered a landmark judgment today in the infamous Sathankulam police custody murder case. The court deemed this incident, which shamed humanity, as one of the rarest of rare crimes, sentencing nine police officers to death. Judge G. Muthukumaran emphasized that this case exemplified the extreme abuse of power and brutality.

The incident dates back to 2020, during the nationwide COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown. In Sathankulam, Thoothukudi district, shop owner P. Jayaraj (59) and his son J. Benix (31) were taken into custody simply for keeping their shop open beyond the permitted hours.

During their detention, the father and son endured inhumane torture at the police station, leading to their deaths. This shocking event not only rattled Tamil Nadu but also sparked widespread outrage against police brutality across the country.

CBI Investigation and Court's Firm Stance

Given the severity of the case, the investigation was handed over to the CBI. They filed a comprehensive charge sheet of 2,427 pages, providing evidence that the deaths of the father and son were the result of a premeditated conspiracy and extreme brutality.

Convicted Policemen

The court found Inspector S. Sridhar, Sub-Inspector Raghu Ganesh, and Balakrishnan among the nine guilty officers. Another accused, Pauldurai, passed away during the trial.

This ruling sends a strong message regarding police reform and custodial deaths in the country. The court ensured that there is no place in a democracy for those who take the law into their own hands under the guise of authority. This judgment serves as a beacon of hope for families who have long awaited justice.
