A Momentous Occasion in Nepal's House of Representatives

Today marked a significant and emotional moment in Nepal's House of Representatives. According to the Federal Parliament Secretariat, a total of 47 newly elected members took their oaths in their native languages in addition to Nepali. This event saw the oath being administered in 17 different languages, filling the walls of the new parliament building with a multilingual resonance.

Celebrating Diversity Through Language

This occasion stands as a vibrant example of Nepal's pluralistic democracy. The oath-taking ceremony for the newly elected members, following the general elections held on Falgun 21 (March 5, 2026), took place today at 2 PM in the multipurpose hall of the new parliament building. The process was led by the senior member, 78-year-old Arjun Nar Singh KC of the Nepali Congress, who first took the oath from President Ram Chandra Paudel before administering it to the other members.

A Festival of Languages

According to the parliament secretariat, the 47 members chose to take their oaths in their mother tongues alongside Nepali. The prominent languages included:

  • Maithili and Nepal Bhasa (Newari) – the most represented (6 members each)

  • Doti, Tharu, Tamang, Bantawa

  • Sanskrit – Rastriya Prajatantra Party's member Khushbu Oli took her oath in Sanskrit

  • Bhojpuri, Magahi, Awadhi, among others

Seven members from the Shram Culture Party (SSP) took their oaths in four different languages. Many members donned traditional attire reflecting their cultural identities, which is permitted by law.

Significance of the Event

The Constitution of Nepal and the Oath Act of 2022 clearly state that members can take their oaths in their mother tongues, provided they submit a certified translation to the parliament secretariat three days in advance. This time, 47 members exercised this right, a significant increase compared to previous elections.

Analysts suggest that this move will further strengthen Nepal's federal democracy. With dozens of languages and hundreds of ethnic groups in the country, the members taking their oaths in their native languages sends a strong message that the parliament represents the diversity of all of Nepal, not just Kathmandu.

Reactions from Members and Leaders

  • Arjun Nar Singh KC (Senior Member): “This day is a proud moment for Nepal's democracy. Respecting every language and culture is the essence of true inclusive democracy.”

  • Khushbu Oli (Rastriya Prajatantra Party): After taking her oath in Sanskrit, she expressed pride in the ancient language being represented in the modern parliament.

  • Several Madhesi and indigenous members became emotional while speaking in their languages. A Tharu member remarked, “Today, my mother tongue resonated in parliament; this is the greatest honor for me.”

What Lies Ahead?

Following the oath-taking, the first parliamentary session is set to commence soon, which will include the election of the Speaker, selection of the Prime Minister, and the formation of a new government. Meanwhile, this example of linguistic diversity has become a topic of discussion across the nation.

In a small yet culturally rich country like Nepal, taking oaths in 17 languages is not just symbolic but a concrete step towards bringing democracy to the grassroots level.

A New Era for Democracy in Nepal

Democracy in Nepal is truly taking on a new hue – where every voice, language, and identity is given equal respect.

This historic moment will inspire millions of citizens who are fighting to preserve and honor their mother tongues.

Congratulations: Best wishes to all 47 members on their oath-taking! It is hoped that they will serve the nation with their language and culture in the assembly.
