Historic Move for Women's Reservation in Lok Sabha Discussed by Law Minister

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal has announced the time has come to implement the historic women's reservation bill in the Lok Sabha. During discussions on key legislative amendments, he emphasized the importance of this initiative for political justice for women. With plans to increase Lok Sabha seats to 815, Meghwal assured that no state would be adversely affected by these changes. This move is seen as a significant step towards fulfilling the vision of a developed India, as articulated by former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The proposal has garnered support, marking a pivotal moment in parliamentary history.
 

Women's Reservation Bill Gains Momentum in Lok Sabha

On Thursday, Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Union Law Minister, emphasized in the Lok Sabha that the time has come to implement the historic decision regarding women's reservation. He initiated discussions on the Delimitation Bill, the Union Territory Law Amendment Bill, and the Constitution (One Hundred Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026. Prior to this, Meghwal proposed to suspend the provisions of Rule 66 of the procedural rules to facilitate the passage of the Delimitation Bill and the Union Territory Law Amendment Bill, as they are contingent upon the Constitution Amendment Bill, 2026. Following a vote in the house, this proposal was approved, with 251 members voting in favor and 185 against it.


Significance of the Women's Reservation Bill

The proposal stated that the house should suspend the procedural rules concerning the consideration and passage of the Delimitation Bill, 2026, and the Union Territory Law (Amendment) Bill, 2026, as they depend on the Constitution (One Hundred Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026. Meghwal expressed his pride and excitement, declaring that today would be inscribed in golden letters in parliamentary history.


He referenced the Nari Shakti Vandan Act passed in 2023, asserting that the time to implement this historic decision has arrived. He highlighted the government's commitment to social justice, stating that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, there is both intention and policy to support this initiative. Meghwal noted that the implementation of the women's reservation bill would ensure political justice for women, with a provision to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats by 50%, raising the total to 815.


Addressing Concerns from Opposition

Meghwal dismissed concerns raised by opposition members, assuring that no state would suffer any loss. He reiterated that the power held by each state would remain unchanged. Citing a statement from former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam regarding women's reservation, he stated that under Prime Minister Modi's leadership, Kalam's vision is being realized. He concluded by asserting that the passage of this historic amendment would propel India towards becoming a developed nation.
