Jorhat, Oct 16: A mortar shell, believed to be from World War II, was safely detonated by the Army near Chotai Tea Estate in Mariani on Friday, leading to widespread panic in the surrounding areas close to Nagaland.
The Army’s 261 CEDO Bomb Disposal Team conducted the operation near the Disoi forest area, east of Chotai Tea Estate, with police oversight. Following the controlled explosion, both the Army and police cordoned off the area to prevent public access as a safety measure.
The blast was heard in nearby regions, including Chotai, Rongkham, and Laojan, which are adjacent to the Nagaland border.
This mortar shell was unearthed on Tuesday, October 13, during excavation activities at Tokolai, close to Jorhat Cemetery Road. Its discovery raised alarms, prompting a swift response from local police, including the Additional Superintendent of Police of Jorhat.
A police representative at the scene noted that the projectile appeared aged and likely dated back to World War II, although its exact origin was not confirmed at that moment.
“The mortar seems old at first glance and could potentially be live. We urge everyone to keep a safe distance,” the official stated.
Additionally, a specialized team from Dergaon was dispatched to assess and safely dispose of the explosive.
“It might also be a misfired weapon that someone brought home, but we cannot confirm anything at this stage,” the official added.
The vicinity around the mortar's location was secured to ensure public safety while authorities evaluated the potential risks associated with the explosive.
